The Virginia Peninsula chapter of MOAA (VIPMOAA) attended the 80th Division Welcome Home Warrior Citizen Award Ceremony at Fort Eustis Virginia on January 28th 2007.  The ceremony was for 80th Division soldiers in the central Virginia area who were mobilized or deployed following September 11, 2001 in support of the global war on terrorism.  The keynote speaker was Major General David L. Evans, Commanding General of the 80th Division, with remarks from other esteemed guests.  Friends and family members were welcome, and the event was open to the public.

On Sunday 22 October 06 at 2:00 P.M. at the Virginia War Memorial, the people of Richmond had the honor and privilege to demonstrate their respect and show appreciation to members of the 80th Army Reserve Division returning from Iraq and to their families, both having made sacrifices faced by few Americans. Each American may harbor specific opinions on the WAR being waged in Iraq. but regardless of one’s personal feelings there should be A COMMON THREAD HELD BY AMERICANS – RESPECT and APPRECIATION FOR OUR MILITARY MEN AND WOMEN WHO PROTECT OUR FREEDOMS BY SERVING IN HARM’S WAY. They had NO CHOICE—It was THEIR DUTY TO SERVE. These deployed troops and their families made sacrifices of significant disruptions to family life and impact upon their civilian careers, to insure our freedoms and protect our home land security. Freedoms which many in the world do not have the opportunity to enjoy. I make a PERSONAL REQUEST; Give an hour of your time and join other Virginians to honor our troops and their families for their dedication in serving OUR NATION. For your information similar ceremonies will be held in three other Virginia locations and four in PA.,MD., and W.Va.  Delegate Kirk Cox presented a framed General Assembly Joint House Resolution honoring the 80th Division and its members for their service. General Evans, the Commanding General of the 80th was present to accept the Resolution for the 80th. I personally invited two other Generals living in Richmond, both of whom were Commanding Generals of the Division to join me in expressing our appreciation to the troops and family members. Other local personalities were present.  Food and beverages were contributed by local merchants.  REALLY NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK CONSIDERING WHAT THOSE TO BE HONORED HAVE GIVEN US, ALLOWING US TO ENJOY UNINTERRUPTED LIFESTYLES WHILE THEY PROTECTED OUR FREEDOMS. Hope to see many at these worth-while events. Show your “COLORS” and RESPECT for America and our military personnel and their families
